Q  What do I need to do to start learning how to drive?

The first thing you need to do is to apply for your theory test you can do this on line or over the phone, see our theory test page.

Q   How much money dose the theory test cost.

The theory test costs €35.60 if you book on line or over the phone you can pay by laser or credit card.

Q  How long does it take to get a test date for the theory test?

It usually only takes up to 10 - 14 working days, but while you are waiting for your theory test date, you must prepare for your test.

Q  After I pass my theory test what do I have to do next.

After you have passed your theory test you need to apply for your leaner permit. Application forms for the new learner driving permits (Form D.201) are not yet available online. This form is available from your Motor Taxation Office but you can request Form D.201 by post through CitizensInformation.ie. You need to bring your completed application form to your local Motor taxation office accompanied by:

• Two identical passport-type photographs with the reverse of both signed by you.
• A birth certificate or passport.
• An eyesight report. Download an eyesight report form (D.502) (pdf). This form is also available from your Motor Taxation Office or you can request form D.502 by post through CitizensInformation.ie. A completed eyesight report form must accompany all first time learner permit applications.This can be done at you Doctors or your local opticians.
• The 15 euro fee.

If you are applying by post, pay the fee by cheque, bank draft or postal order, made payable to your local authority. If you are applying for your learner permit in person, you may pay the fee in cash. 

Q  After I get my learners permit can I drive on my own?

No. You must have a full licensed person with you at all times until you pass your test.
